Free time is most often scarce and is used intensively to pursue personal inclinations and interests.
Indoors, table-tennis rooms and work-out rooms are provided for recreation. Particularly in winter the sauna in house is intended to keep at bay the colds so dreaded by singers. It goes without saying that a TV room, a library, a computer room, and a billiard room are all part of an appropriate living and working environment. Outdoors, a playground in front of the house with monkey bars and a large sand pit with swings affords a welcome change of pace for the youngest choir members when the weather is good. The adjacent park and meadows on the banks of the nearby Elbe allow the young singers space and the opportunity to relax, both of which they enjoy using. Football is the favourite sport of all ages.
The Choir Council, which is the Crucians’ elected representative body, includes one member each from grades 5 through 12 and meets every week. Crucians may approach the Council with any problems or issues. The prefect, a Crucian in his final year prior to Abitur, is chairman of the Choir Council. He takes care of issues arising outside the musical work of the choir.
Every Thursday afternoon the house masters offer leisure activities ranging from swimming, bowling, or punting on the Carola Pond through exploring the city, visiting museums, and afternoons of playing games of various kinds. At one weekend in autumn all the Crucians and staff members go on a trip called “Chorfreizeit” (choir break), which is meant literally. All notes and school materials are to be left behind; these days are dedicated solely to recreational activities such as hiking, experiencing nature, football games, archery practice, night expeditions, and sitting by the campfire.
