Musical education at the Kreuzschule is dominated by choir rehearsals and one-on-one tutorials. In daily rehearsals the boys study demanding works from all epochs of musical history in order to perform them at the highest artistic level during the choir's appearances. The rehearsal phases are supplemented by historical, theological and cultural interpretations.
Each week every Crucian has a one-on-one voice tutorial, which forms the basis for singing in the choir. Particularly gifted Crucians are prepared for solo-performances or for taking part in opera productions. Abitur students planning to study music receive specific attention.
In addition all boys receive weekly lessons to learn to play an instrument, predominantly the piano or the violin. Particularly gifted Crucians may also learn to play a further instrument in extra lessons. Concurrently, music theory is included as a useful supplement to the boys' singing development.
Selected Crucians in the older age groups receive individual artistic training from the Cantor and the choir assistant to become choir prefects.
In order that the students achieve excellence in the individually tutored subjects despite their frequent choir duties, the teachers draw on many years of experience, great pedagogical competence, much patience, and the ability to implement the curricula using the most suitable methods.
